The “Alphabetical List”—PG 59 Royal Air Force Internees

Emblem of the Royal Air Force

The “Alphabetical Lists”—WO 392 in The National Archives, UK—are compilations of WWII prisoners of war from all branches of HM Forces, including other nationals under British command, held in Germany or German-occupied territory, Italy, and Japan or Japanese-occupied territory.

A publication date of August 1943 is listed for WO 392/21, a subseries listing Imperial POWs who were reported by Italian or Red Cross sources as being prisoners in Italian hands.

The Italian WO 392/21 is comprised of:

Section 1: British Army. Section 2: Australian Army. Section 3: Canadian Army. Section 4: New Zealand Army. Section 5: South African Army. Section 6: Indian Army. Section 7: Naval Forces and Merchant Seamen. Section 8: Air Forces.

In 2015—16, I shared on this site POWs from the WO 392/21 subseries listed as being interned in PG 59. However, at that time I overlooked Section 8: Air Forces. I am now correcting that oversight by adding the airmen of the RAF now.

I am listing RAF PG 59 POWs here, and I will list the Canadians in a separate post.

Lists for the Royal Australian Air Force, the Royal New Zealand Air Force, and the South African Air Force contain no airmen interned in PG 59.

Royal Air Force Officers

The Royal Air Force “Alphabetical List” references one RAF officer in PG 59.

The Alphabetical List—British Soldiers N–Z

alphabetical-list-sm-r72

In 2013, researcher Brian Sims gave me access to his photographs of the complete contents of a booklet entitled Italy: Imperial Prisoners of War Alphabetical List, Section 1, British Army, which is archived at the British National Archives.

The Alphabetical List contains the names of thousands of British prisoners of war interned in Italian camps, apparently compiled in 1942 or the spring of 1943.

This post, which contains Alphabetical List soldiers N–Z who were documented as P.G. 59 internees, is the completion of the list, which I have been posting in installments on this site.

See also “The Alphabetical List—British Soldiers A–B,” “The Alphabetical List—British Soldiers C–F,” “The Alphabetical List—British Soldiers G–J,” and “The Alphabetical List—British Soldiers K–M.”

The Alphabetical List—British Soldiers A–B

alphabetical-list-r72

In July 2013 my friend Brian Sims sent me a set of photographs of a remarkable document he had uncovered in the British National Archives.

One hundred thirty-eight pages in length, Italy: Imperial Prisoners of War Alphabetical List, Section 1, British Army, contains the names of thousands of British prisoners of war, along with their ranks, service numbers, and the military units to which they belonged.

The booklet is divided into sections for officers and “other ranks.”

Because officers were not typically interned at P.G. 59, only three are listed.

These officers provided healthcare to the internees: Captain T. R. Hodgson, Royal Army Dental Corps (serving as the camp’s dentist); Captain J. H. D. Millar, Royal Army Medical Corps (the chief medical officer for the camp); and A. R. Duff Royal Army Medical Corps (also a camp medical officer).

I am unsure of why Brigadier S. William, Royal Artillery, was present in the camp.

Sergeant Major T. W. Hegarty was P.G. 59 camp leader before Captain Millar assumed that role on September 9, 1943 due to Hegarty’s sudden incapacity. Hegarty, R.S.M. (Regimental Sergeant Major—a non-commissioned rank), Royal Armoured Corps, is listed among other ranks in this document.

This post contains the names of the officers and names A–B of other ranks—147 men in all.

I will share the rest of the British P.G. 59 internees’ names in future posts.
