Reporter Barbara Bedell covered this annual September veterans Day of Remembrance ceremony for the Times Herald-Record of Middletown, New York.
The article begins with a tribute to six former POWs:
“Six former World War II prisoner of war were recognized by more than 400 veterans and their guests during the recent annual Orange County Veterans Coalition POW/MIA Day of Remembrance. It was conducted in the Town of Goshen Park.
“While the focus was on remembering those unaccounted for whether as prisoners of war or missing in action, the crowd’s warmth was aimed at the six former POWs who attended. They were Harvey Horn of Monroe, Kenneth Knapp of Middletown, Bill Stratis of New Windsor, Ray Mellin of Cornwall-on-Hudson, Richard Kane of Montgomery, and Jack Grunin, who was visiting Monticello but lives in the state of Florida.”
Richard Kane, left, and his brother Henry are shown with their mother, Lydia, in this photo from the 1940s.
